Pinhole EKO Photo Workshop

Start:06.10.2016 11:00 h
End:07.10.2016 18:00 h

@ Vanha Paukka Kulttuurikeskus, Lapua

Filmverkstaden is proud to present to you a week with Dagie Brundert (DE).

Dagie has a growing reputation within the ecological film processing movement and we are very happy that she is coming to Finland to share her magnificent recipes with us.

There will be 2 workshops with Dagie, photo in Lapua and film in Vaasa, as part of Föreningsfestivalen 2016.
Sign up for one or both via mail.
Max. 8 participants. 50€ fee for materials per workshop.

I have been experimenting with alternatives to traditional developers that are harmful to the environment for some time. And I stumbled across CAFFENOL, a black and white negative developer! A lot of photographers have already tried it and there are various recipes and reports circulating on the Internet!

Caffenol consists of instant coffee, vitamin C powder and washing soda.
You can easily find the three of them around the corner for little money. Better buy the cheapest type of coffee, it contains the most caffeic acid which is bad for your stomach but essential for developing! Dispose the soup after use in the toilet.

What more is possible? Kitchen stuff like beer, wine, vodka, apple juice, flower tea, weed, moss, bark, mushroom soup. It smells interesting-alchemistic, it’s eco and it develops film as nicely as regular photo chemicals! We explore the local surroundings, collect herbs and water, boil some yummy soups, film and develop together!

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole. We love to drink coffee and use it as developer so we take a coffee can (Illy for example: beautiful and easy and tight to close!), learn how to sting a tiny hole in it, fill it with b&w sheet film / paper, go out into the city / street / wood / field and, depending on the weather, experiment with exposures from 1 second to half an hour! Develop the film / paper in a brew made from coffee, vitamin c and washing soda.

You bring cans, I bring holes!
Pinhole cameras can be made from simple things like coffee and peppermint and tea and currypowder cans as long as they have a light tight lid!
Let’s drill a hole, cover it with aluminium foil with a very small hole inside or a laser drilled pre-produced special hole (I’ll bring some with me)!
Put photo film and paper in the box, make experiments outside in sun and rain … and in the end: develop it all in coffee soup!
